Seven tips for composing and sending texts
By Paul Rosenfeld on December 20th, 2009
Writing a good text is simple if you follow these easy guidelines.
A good text message will:
Make a compelling and clear offer or provide relevant information. Exclusive mobile-only offers increase the perceived value of your mobile fan club. Inside information they can’t get elsewhere heightens engagement.
Let your fan know who it’s from. Start every text with “From [keyword].” Text messages sent by Fanminder will only show our short code on your fan’s phone, so you’ll want to include your business name so that your mobile fans will know to open your text.
Avoid youth texting slang. Texting isn’t just for kids anymore, so don’t treat it as such.
Make judicious use of the ‘return’ command. Use a “return” to compose a text that’s more pleasing to the eye and easier to read.
Have A Strong ‘Call To Action’. Make sure that you make it clear what you want the customer to do. For promotions it’s usually a good idea to end with something such as “Show this text at the counter” so you can assess the impact of Fanminder on your business’s sales.
Note: Fanminder always adds the following text to the end of each text message: “Reply Opt-out to opt-out”
What time of day to typically send text messages
People are most receptive between 10-2pm and then again in the early evening. Of course this rule of thumb will vary wildly with your business and your fans.
How often to send text messages
Don’t over-send texts to your fans. We typically recommend that you send no more than one text message per week to your list to minimize opt-outs. However this rule of thumb truly depends on the unique characteristics of your business and fans.
