Does texting lead to violence?

By Paul Rosenfeld on March 20th, 2010

Terrible news yesterday about “text rage” and “text riots” from Broward County in Florida. A 15 year old girl was nearly beaten to death by a similar aged boy who was angry about her texts to him.

The video is distrurbing and raises the age-old question: Is the tool to blame for human behaviors? Psychologists on the video share “text rage” as a syndrome that sparks violence due to impersonality of medium. Certainly, there seems more than an element of intuitive truth in this. But I can’t help wonder whether this young boy was a powder keg waiting for the right trigger to set him off.
